Firebacks are commonly made from either cast-iron or stainless steel sheets that are proportion in size to the back panel of the fireplace.  The fireback fits against the back wall of the fireplace and can either be free standing or secured in place with braces.

Firebacks work on the principle of radiant heat, in that the fire heats the metal, which then reflect the heat out into the room.  These wonderful accessories vary in price depending on the style of fireback you choose.  Cast-iron fireback can cost from $250 upwards to approximately $1000.00 especially if you purchase an antique, whereas a stainless steel fireback can cost from $50 to approximately $200 depending on the size.  

Firebacks, whether they are cast-iron or stainless steel firebacks will significantly increase the warming capability of a wood or gas fireplace fire.  In addition, this simple fireplace accessory can also enhance the appearance of your hearth, while helping you to lower your heating bills.
